I have quite a few hobbies that I enjoy. At times they translate well into the classroom. I have used my interest in amateur radio to teach history and geography in 5th grade. Did you know that Abraham Lincoln was the first Commander in Chief to have direct communications access to his leaders on the battlefield? He used Morse Code over telegraph lines to give orders to his generals as they fought.
I also enjoy photography. Some of my retired gear is on display in my classroom and as long as they treat it respectfully, students are encouraged to handle the displays. I have watched these hands on experiences generate questions that lead to discussions about everything from art to mechanics. I love seeing their inquisitiveness grow into an enthusiasm for knowledge. The coolest thing about this is that they are learning so much from this process and they don't even realize it.
